Below Hauser Dam – PMDs Are Hatching
The Pale Morning Duns have arrived and the dry fly fishing has followed. Afternoons are where it’s happening. Once the sun gets on the water and the bugs start moving, fish stack up in the feeding lanes and the slicks come alive. If you know the sneaky spots, you’ll find good numbers of fish tucked in there and willing to take drys.
Mornings belong to the nymph rod. Fish deep early, then shorten up as the day progresses and fish begin to suspend. The bite has held strong throughout the day for anglers who stay in the zone and keep their presentations clean. Top nymphs in sizes 16–18: Sow Bug, PMD Split Case, S&M Nymph, Frenchie, TNT PMD. On the dry fly, the PMD Cripple and Rusty Spinner have been fooling them. Caddis, tricos, and terrestrials are moving into the rotation, hopper season isn’t far off, and when it hits its some of our favorite afternoon fishing.

Upper Holter and Lower Holter Reservoir – Callibaetis Time
The callibaetis have been coming off strong in the late mornings on Holter and Upper Holter. Fish are cruising and looking up. Small chubby chernobyls, Adams, and callibaetis spinners have found takers on the surface. Work the depth changes and weed beds, and time it right. The dry fly bite can sometime be a short window but can produce some really big lake run fish.
Northern Pike – Mixed Bag
We’ve been mixing in some morning northern pike fishing for our folks who like to throw big flies and strip hard. Results have been mixed. Most of the big females have pushed off the weed beds and settled into deeper water just off the edges. They’re still there, just a little harder to find than earlier in the season. A good day of streamer fishing with a shot at a 20 pound Northern Pike. Worth it.
Land of the Giants Fishing Access – Jet Boat Only
We run jet boats up from the Gates of the Mountains Marina it’s the best way reach this section, and right now it’s worth every minute of the crossing. Only a handful of outfitters are permitted to operate out here, which keeps pressure manageable even during peak season.
Looking Ahead
The caddis, tricos, and terrestrials are right around the corner. The dry fly window that’s cracking open right now is only going to get better.
A few late summer dates remain. Reach out here
