Float and Wade Fishing Montana

Sustaining Montana's Rivers

Montana is a state known for its beautiful scenery, vast wilderness, and world-class fly fishing. With its crystal-clear rivers and streams, Montana is a haven for fly anglers. Two of the most popular ways to fish in Montana are wade fishing and drift boat fishing. Let’s explore the differences and benefits of float and wade fishing Montana’s wild rivers.

Wade Fishing Montana’s Wild Rivers

One of the biggest advantages of wade fishing is the level of control it provides the angler. When wading in a river or stream, an angler can choose exactly where to position themselves. This level of control allows for a more targeted approach, and can be very effective.

Wade fishing also allows anglers to access areas that are not easily reached by boat. For example, some rivers may have sections that are too shallow or too narrow for drift boats to navigate. In these cases, wade fishing can be a great way to explore and fish these areas.

Another advantage of wade fishing is that it can be a more physically engaging experience. Standing in the water and casting requires more effort than simply sitting in a boat staring at a strike indicator. For a lot of anglers they enjoy the walking aspect of wade fishing. Walking the river bank is a great way to stay active and engaged in the fishery.

However, wade fishing does have some drawbacks. One of the biggest challenges is that it can be more difficult to cover a lot of water when wading. This can make it harder to locate fish, particularly in large rivers where fish may be spread out.

Wade fishing can also be more physically demanding than fishing from a drift boat. Traversing slippery uneven bottom can be difficult to navigate for some. Anglers should be aware of current river flows for safety. A good pair of wading boots and a wading staff is a must when wade fishing Montana.

Float fishing from a Drift Boat

Fishing from a drift boat is very popular here in Montana. Drive around any little trout town and you’ll see dozens of drift boats in tow. Fishing from a drift boat the oarsmen is in control of the drift and overall safety. Drift boats are very comfortable and stable fishing platforms that can accommodate two anglers.

One of the biggest advantages of drift boat fishing is that it allows anglers to cover a lot of water with really long drifts. This can be particularly effective in larger rivers like the Missouri River. By floating, anglers can cover a lot of ground and increase their chances of finding fish or hatches.

Fishing from a drift boat also allows anglers to access areas of a river that may be difficult to reach by wading. For example, some rivers may have deep fast-moving runs like the Land of Giants that are not safe for wading. Another advantage of drift boat fishing is that it can be a more relaxing and comfortable experience than wade fishing. Wading in cold spring, fall or even winter water can be challenging. Fishing from a drift boat, particularly on colder days if much more enjoyable.

Float and Wade Fishing Montana are both very effective. If I had to pick i’d choose BOTH!
